#actandprotest identified as example of good teaching practice

For the past two years I have been using #actandprotest to share resources with my students on the third year undergraduate module ‘Activism and Protest in the Information Age.’ This has been identified by the Leicester Learning Institute as an example of good practice. You can find some more information on this (and a contribution from me on how to use social media in teaching) here

New Screencast project funded by University of Leicester Teaching Enhancement Fund

Just found out that another screencast project that I will be involved in has been awarded £2002.00 from the University’s Teaching Enhancement Fund. I will be a co-investigator on ‘Screencasts in Engineering,’ a project led by Dr Hugo Williams and Dr Andrew Norman (Engineering). This project will build on the work on Screencasts in Media Studies, exploring how screencasts can be used to support Engineering students at the University. I look forward to working with Hugo and Andrew over the next few months on what should be a very interesting project.

Reportage club talk on social media, parades and protests

Last night I participated in a great event on conflict reportage organised by John Coster as part of Documentary Media Month.

I spoke about the role of social media in the reporting of parades and protests in Northern Ireland and thoroughly enjoyed the discussions about the ways in which protests are digitally mediated. A few pics of my talk (kindly provided by John) are below:

Many thanks to John and everyone else involved for the invite and organisation- very much appreciated.

The Documentary Media Month runs until 30th November and further information about upcoming events can be found here

Update: Reportage Club on 26th November and new position

A few updates to share this week:

1) Reportage Club, Documentary Media Centre, 26th November, 6-8pm

I will be participating in an event on conflict reportage organised by John Coster (Citzens’ Eye) next Wednesday. Amongst other things, we will discuss my research on new media and citizen journalism in ‘post-conflict’ Northern Ireland.

Full details on the reportage club can be found here: http://citizenseye.org/2014/10/15/reportage-club-events-in-doc-media-month/

2) New role

I have recently taken on the role of Deputy Director of Research in the Department of Media and Communication. My role will involve giving feedback on external grant proposals and helping our Director of Research Professor Helen Wood in shaping the Department research strategy. As REF Impact Coordinator, I will be responsible for the identification of potential case studies for REF2020 and will work with the College of Social Science to capture evidence of the impact of research conducted within the Department. Therefore, you should expect more REF-related tweets in my stream than usual in the next few months…(apologies in advance!).

More details on the Book of Blogs (published by NatCen in conjunction with SAGE) can be found below:

#Telekineticmedia, ThisPlace and ‘Performance Anxiety’ ☺

Worth a read – Andy McStay on telekinetic media and Google Glass.

andymcstay's avatarReflections On Glass

A busy week in London seeing analytics companies and developers, but in one standout meeting I took my first photo by means of telekinesis. This was on Wednesday at ThisPlace, the developers of MindRDR. A massive thanks go to Russell Plunkett (Innovations Director) for generosity of time and installing MindRDR on my Glass unit. Much appreciated.

Having been somewhat underwhelmed with Glass the MindRDR app grants insight into the potential for Glass. Despite the mass-market push (will or won’t Google launch it, how much will it cost, what will people do with it, will they be beaten to the UK market by other headsets, and so on), I’ve been fairly sceptical about its adoption. I’ve yet to meet a wearer who feels comfortable with them in public and who does not recognise the potential for making other people around them feel uncomfortable. We began by discussing some of the opportunities…
